Getting Started: A Three Day One-on-One Seminar

Getting Started is designed for you if you are in the early stages of your philanthropic journey. It is an intensive three day one-on-one private seminar in your own home in which your NPA Advisor will:

•	work with you in interactive exercises to identify the personal values that shape your philanthropic purpose

•	help you articulate the goals of your giving in a clear and compelling mission statement

•	provide information and guidance on identifying the right “point of entry” for you, where your dedication of time, skills, and financial resources can make a real difference

•	provide a primer on appropriate giving vehicles, from the establishment of a donor advised fund to a small family foundation

•	steer you to the best available resources, including books, periodicals, blogs, and websites

•	Create an initial list of the most promising leaders and organizations in your focus area

Format: Getting Started consists of three full days of one-on-one instruction with an NPA advisor in your home. You may also wish to invite a daughter or closest friends to join you. Prior to the first day of Getting Started you will be given a reading list and a detailed questionnaire helping you explore your personal giving history, where you may have been “out of alignment” in your past giving, and the experiences that inspire you to make a difference.

Goal: Upon completion of your three day private seminar you will have developed a clear statement of your philanthropic mission, a knowledge of basic concepts in philanthropy, a sense of your personal “point of entry,“ a knowledge of the resources you can draw upon as you start your philanthropic journey, and an initial list of promising leaders and organizations in your area of interest.

Cost: Getting Started priced as a package with base cost (and incremental fee for additional participants), plus travel expenses. Please call for more information.

Creating a Network: Connecting, Learning, Collaborating

Creating a Network is for you if you have a clear sense of the difference you want to make and wish to connect with the leaders, thinkers, organizations, and other funders doing the best work in your area of interest. In Creating a Network your NPA Advisor will work closely with you to:

•	lead you to the best meetings and conferences in your area of interest and accompany you to these and other events to facilitate your process of network-building

•	create domestic or international site visits and guide you through your experience of the best projects and practices “in the field.”

•	introduce you to leaders in your area of interest and facilitate one-on-one meetings with them in your home or other location to explore how your support can make a critical difference

•	connect you to other women funders with whom you can share and collaborate

•	introduce you to setting up a giving entity, whether it is a donor advised fund or small family foundation

•	create a website for your giving efforts to communicate your philanthropic focus to your friends, family, other funders, and potential grantees

•	brainstorm with you ideas and approaches to starting your own organization or project, if desired, including identifying potential partners already doing high-quality work in your field of interest

•	assist you in securing the right support to leverage your time as you grow your giving, whether it is a personal assistant to assume administrative tasks, or a project coordinator to team with you

Format: Creating a Network is an ongoing relationship in which you and your NPA advisor work closely in person or via phone and email in an alliance you and she design to meet your philanthropic needs and personal lifestyle.

Goal: This phase of your evolution as a grantmaker can last for one month or many. During it your NPA Advisor acts as your expert, teammate, and facilitator, answering your questions, connecting you to the best resources to help you forward your mission, and, if you choose, integrating your family into your efforts. At the end of this phase you will be empowered with the knowledge and network to move your philanthropy to a new level.

Cost: Creating a Network is priced on a retainer basis with clearly-defined parameters and goals. Your NPA Advisor is engaged at a set hourly or daily rate, plus expenses.

Getting Traction: Making a Difference

Getting Traction is for you if you have developed your vision and mission, established a donor advised fund, private foundation, or non-profit entity, and are currently making grants or overseeing projects. In this phase of your journey you can call on NPA Advisors to facilitate any aspect of your efforts where our ability to connect philanthropists to networks and resources can be of service. We can:

•	act as liason to consultants specializing in all aspects of foundation and non-profit operations

•	give you ongoing notification of conferences, meetings, emerging projects and leaders, and accompany you to events or conferences if you wish

•	create an intergenerational family retreat or meeting to invite your family to share your mission and participate in age-appropriate ways

•	help you identify an executive director to help you grow your foundation or non-profit organization

•	create small informational convenings—meetings, dinners, one-day seminars—in which you gather thought leaders, other funders, and your board members or knowledgeable friends to share information and ideas

•	provide any of the services listed in Creating a Network, but with your ongoing established philanthropic program in mind
